When you get serious about your trading, you will be told that you need to develop a strategy of continuous education, investing in yourself, in order to stay in touch with the marketplace and current thinking.  You may think that this is just a ploy from those who run the investment courses, in order to get you to spend more, but you will find it almost universally reported by career traders that you go stale and your trading suffers if you choose to continue trading with only your initial education.

When you are a new trader, it is extremely important that you have a desire to learn. Many people come to the trading business thinking that they can make a huge profit with little time investment, and these other people who are sadly doomed to fail. As many as 80% of the people who start trading give up in the first six months. However, it is possible to go too far the other way and to suffer the “paralysis of analysis”, getting stuck in a cycle of information consumption, without taking much action towards active trading.

Investment education is best when it provides a variety of options in how you can gather the information you need. Oftentimes, you can get a sound basis from which to build your trading strategy by reading some books, but this sort of presentation can be somewhat dry. A more interactive environment, such as a training course with questions and answers to provide some feedback on your progress, is another resource which is more expensive but more thorough in making sure that you learn the information.

A great many courses nowadays come on DVD, where you can sit and watch the presenter, or the charts as they are explained. It’s helpful when using this to keep comprehensive notes, such as you would in a university lecture, as otherwise this form of visual representation can pass you over – many people are used to paying little attention to television programs and this can be an automatic reaction to this style of presentation. Having said that, it is a much more effective means of learning if approached in the right manner, and you will benefit greatly from having at least one investment course in this format.  Another version of this is to have streaming video on your computer, and this can also be used to keep you up to the minute on trading matters.

You can further your education by reading and taking part in one of the many trading forums available online, where you will find that discussing common problems and different approaches will keep you on your toes and thinking about what you’re doing when you are trading.  Many investment courses have associated forums for the members to talk about their trading experiences, and interact with the teachers.
